A car service is often confused with an MOT, but they are different things. An MOT is a legal annual test of whether a car is safe to be on the road. A service is preventative maintenance: it replaces the parts that wear out and checks the ones that are starting to, so your car stays reliable and problems are caught early.
Exactly what is included depends on whether you book an interim or a full service, but the core of the job is the same.
Oil and filters
The headline item is an engine oil and oil filter change. Oil breaks down with use and stops protecting the engine, so fresh oil of the correct grade is the single most valuable thing a service does. A full service usually adds the air filter, and often the fuel and cabin (pollen) filters too.
Fluids and the under-bonnet check
The technician checks and tops up coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid and screen wash, and looks for leaks. Brake fluid in particular absorbs moisture over time, which is why it is checked and periodically replaced.
Brakes, tyres and safety
Brake pads and discs are inspected for wear, tyres are checked for tread depth, condition and correct pressure, and lights, wipers and the battery are tested. These are the items most likely to fail an MOT, so a good service flags them before they become a problem.
A look over the rest
- Suspension and steering for play or damage
- Exhaust for leaks or corrosion
- Drive belts and hoses for wear
- Any warning lights, with the service light reset at the end
The bottom line
A service should leave you with a clear picture of your car: what was done, what is wearing, and what to keep an eye on. At MLS Automotive we always explain what we have found before carrying out any extra work, so there are no surprises.
